Breaking Chains

Breaking Chains, a mural by artist Gabe Tiberino, is a tribute to Black empowerment and the leaders who have shaped history. Sponsored by Spak Group, the mural replaces the original artwork by KC White, which was damaged during building renovations. Recognizing the significance of the space, Tiberino reimagined the design, creating a bold and inspiring vision for the future.

The mural features a young girl immersed in the powerful stories of Malcolm X, Guion Bluford, Madame C.J. Walker, Harriet Tubman, Paul Robeson, Marcus Garvey, and Noble Drew Ali—figures who embody resilience, innovation, and leadership. Their presence within the mural serves as a guiding force, inspiring the next generation to break barriers and carve their own paths.

The project extended beyond the wall, engaging the community through theater workshops with Theatre in the X and collaborations with Boys Latin Charter School, ensuring that the mural’s message resonates beyond its visual impact. Breaking Chains stands as a call to action—an invitation for young leaders to rise, empowered by the past and ready to shape the future.
