Reaching Out

Date

2021

Location

3221 Kensington Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, USA

Reaching Out is a powerful mural that explores the journey to recovery and the importance of community support. Created in collaboration with graffiti artist DISTORT, this piece reflects deep engagement with the Kensington community—an area deeply affected by addiction and in need of healing.

Located on an empty storefront, the mural was shaped by direct input from local residents. We asked, “What does healing look like?” and the answers—expressed through words and drawings—helped form a visual narrative of resilience and connection.

At the heart of Reaching Out are symbolic elements that reinforce its message. Towering columns represent the pillars of strength essential for overcoming addiction—family, employment, relationships, and support systems that provide stability. The hands reaching across turbulent waves illustrate how connection is the antidote to addiction—while disconnection makes people more vulnerable, reaching out can lead to recovery. A woman helping another person up symbolizes the importance of both seeking and offering support. On the right, a woman’s face with a circle of people superimposed emphasizes the power of unity—reminding us that connection is tangible and transformative.

Painted with the assistance of Monica Kelly and Damon Bain, this mural stands as a testament to the strength of a community that refuses to give up on its people. Reaching Out is more than just a painting—it’s a call to action, a symbol of hope, and a reminder that none of us heal alone.
