Shoot for the Stars! A Tribute to Wali "The Wonder" Jones

Date

2023

Location

37th & Mt Vernon Playground. Philadelphia, PA

Shoot for the Stars! A Tribute to Wali “The Wonder” Jones is a vibrant mural honoring the legendary athlete, educator, and activist Wali Jones. Created by artists Gabe Tiberino and Taqiy Muhammad, this mural is located in Philadelphia’s Mantua neighborhood, celebrating Jones’ lasting impact both on and off the court.

A key figure in basketball history, Wali “The Wonder” Jones was a member of the 1967 World Champion Philadelphia 76ers, an All-East Regional player for Villanova, and MVP of the USA Senior Dream Team. Beyond his athletic achievements, Jones has dedicated his life to youth development, education, and community activism. His Shoot for the Stars initiative teaches young people the values of discipline, commitment, and perseverance—qualities essential for success in both sports and life.

The mural also highlights Jones’ collaboration with We Embrace Fatherhood and The HUB Coalition, two Mantua-based organizations that provide youth mentorship and programming. A quote from Joe Walker, founder of The HUB Coalition, reinforces the mural’s message of inspiration and guidance for future generations.

This project was completed with the assistance of Damon Bain and Shaun Durbin.

More than just a tribute, Shoot for the Stars! is a call to action, encouraging young people to dream big, stay dedicated, and uplift their communities—just as Wali Jones has done throughout his life.
